Helpful Tips For Tired Teachers

As exciting as the start of a new year can be for some, it can also be just as overwhelming for others. Are you a tired teacher who was hopeful in the promise of a fresh start that a new year provides? 

Now that 2021 is here, are you quickly realizing that you’re still left with the exhaustion of 2020? If that’s you, believe me, I get it. I want you to know that it’s not too late to turn things around. Today, I’ll share some self-care action steps that will help get 2021 off on the right foot.

Hey there! It’s Suzanne Klein, your Freedom Initiator, from Rewrite Your Future at suzanneklein.com. I’m at my home in the Cayman Islands where I’ve been quarantining. You may have noticed that I’ve been offline recently. The end of 2020 was quite busy and stressful for me with the group coaching program I was starting and a vision casting workshop that I offered. It really was a lot of work, and I was exhausted. Looking back, I can see that I was trying to do too much and, as a result, was suffering from “decision fatigue”. 

I know that there are many burnt-out teachers who can identify with that feeling. I heard somewhere that teachers make 1,500 decisions a day. That sounds crazy, but as a former elementary school teacher myself, I can believe it. It’s no wonder that so many teachers are feeling like they want to quit teaching. 

So, here’s what I learned from the exhaustion and overwhelm that accompanied my “decision fatigue” experience:

  • You have to meet your own needs first. You can’t take care of others until you take care of yourself.
  • Self-care is just as important for your mind as it is for your body. Remember, your mind and body are connected.

 

  • We all have the power to change our thoughts. Flip those negative thoughts around and identify the positives.
  • Infuse self-care into your daily routine. I get up early so that I can practice yoga, meditate, journal, and read. 

 

  • Watch your thoughts- they become your words. Watch your words- they become your actions. Watch your actions- they become your habits. Watch your habits- they become your character. Your character leads to your destiny.

 

Now is your chance to rewrite your story. You can become the master over your thoughts (after all, you are what you think) and not the slave to your thoughts. If you’re feeling tired and stuck in your teaching job, and it’s no longer fulfilling you, let me ask you this. If not now, when?
